The three transition words — and why they matter
comprising
Open
The claim covers products/processes that have ALL listed elements, plus anything else. Adding extra features doesn't avoid the claim. The most common choice.
consisting of
Closed
The claim covers ONLY products/processes with exactly the listed elements — nothing more, nothing less. Easy to design around by adding anything.
consisting essentially of
Middle
Covers the listed elements plus anything that doesn't materially affect the basic and novel characteristics. A compromise seldom used.
