Portfolio Profile Types

Blockbuster

High commercial relevance + above-avg citations. These patents are the ones that create industries.

Foundational

High forward citations + technical complexity. Platform IP that others build on.

Sophisticated

High technical complexity. Deep, well-crafted prosecution strategy.

Narrative

High story potential. Memorable inventions with outsized cultural or historical impact.

Balanced

Solid across all four dimensions without a single dominant characteristic.

How portfolio score is calculated

Composite = 35% commercial relevance + 25% normalized citation influence (capped at 3× global avg) + 25% technical complexity + 15% story potential. Commercial relevance leads because it most directly predicts licensing revenue and litigation value. Citation influence is normalized since absolute counts vary widely by domain age.

Minimum sample size

Only companies with 3+ AI-enriched patents are included. With fewer than 3 patents, the scores would be too noisy to be meaningful. Companies in our database may have more patents total — only enriched ones contribute to the scores.

What this is NOT

This is not a legal valuation. These are AI-derived research scores for orientation and exploration. For actual IP due diligence, you need a qualified patent attorney and FTO analysis on the specific patents in question. PatentBrief is a research tool, not a legal service.
